Funny–it was a cold, bright, and cloudless day when I got this shot. The sun and old house were in such contrast that I felt it needed toned down. The result is indeed eerie and almost Halloweenish.
Thanks, Rob. It’s easy this time of year, with the stark landscape, to get simple and striking compositions. This is winter’s saving grace! Thank you. π
There is something so sad about abandoned houses. They were once bustling and full of life, now empty shells. I always think, “If these walls could talk what would they tell you?” An exercise for the imagination.
Hope you’re having a great day! π
Thanks, Eliza. This one looks lonely and abandoned more than most, I suppose, because the decay juxtaposes with its square shape and clean landscape lines. It’s in the middle of rich Illinois farmland with a long, narrow and decayed sidewalk that goes right up to the highway.
You can’t really tell in the shot, but it sits on a plot of land, no outbuildings to speak of, surrounded by farmland, along a stretch of rural two-lane highway a few miles outside a smallish town near the Illinois River.
What struck me most was the long, narrow and decayed sidewalk that went from the front door, all the way to the road.
I think the house was probably a working grain farm at one time.
The property looked very lonely and stark sitting there, surrounded by flat, wintry fields.
A very nice shot. Greetings from Munich!
Greetings, Photoraum! π
Thank you.
Munich! Wonderful! π π
Nice shot, almost eerie looking. MM π

Almost Friday. π
May I ask what do you do in the workaday world when you are not taking photos?
Of course! I work in academic administration at a state university.
Taking pictures and hiking around the woods is a wonderful respite from sitting at a desk all day. π
What a wonderful respite you’ve chosen! Lucky us!
I like this – wonder what the history is of this old building. Great shot!
Hi Mary, thank you :-).

Great image Sharon π
What a wonderful place and your capture of it is just perfect, I love the soft tones and it perfect in mono.
Can you imagine and the memories here, I would love to sit down outside for an afternoon and just tune in to its history π π π
Thanks so much, Nigel. π
I agree! These old places just sit there begging to be explored. The fact that they’re left to the elements makes them all the more interesting!!
So many questions……I’d love to know its history.
Thank you!
I like the starkness and loneliness of this picture.
