My little patch of Illinois received over 7 inches of snow this week, but the lilacs will not be stopped.  Soon this shrub will be covered with fragrant clouds of dark purple blooms.

Farms and simple homes still dot the landscape along a new interstate.  A front-yard view of pastures and sunsets is replaced with four lanes of concrete and the whoosh-hum of highway traffic.
