Hi Merilee, I’ve read a few theories: that it is a throwback to the days when ranchers put old boots on fence posts to signal whether they were home. If the boot pointed to the door, that meant they were home, if it pointed to the gate, it signaled they were gone; to protect the raw wood on the top of the post from weather (this one seems unlikely to me. They’d be putting boots on posts for miles and miles!, or, the most romantic theory is that a cowboy’s boot was placed sole up in hopes that his soul would go to heaven. These days, I suspect people do it for no reason other than it looks fun and whimsical. 🙂
I have seen this before while traveling. What does it mean?
